The band saw is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment in the cutting industry, mainly due to its ability to cut large sections as well as curved and straight lines. In order to choose the right band saw, it is important to know the cutting height you need, as well as the type of teeth of the blade, which will depend on the material to be cut. In general, Allwin band saws are very suitable for cutting sections, veneers, tenons and thin strips from large pieces of wood.
Cutting Height
This is the distance from the saw table upwards to the top guide when it is fully extended and this determines the size of the blank that can be cut. Six inches (150mm) would be the bare minimum for a woodturner.
Blades
The average woodturner is usually either ripping down or cutting circles for turning blanks. Band saw blades are still classed in imperial measure. Teeth are classified in teeth per inch (TPI) or points per inch (PPI). As a rule of thumb 3TPI is really good for woodturners. It will handle green wood and carry away the sawdust without excessive clogging.
Motor Size
Motor sizes range from ½ to 1 ½ HP. Smaller sized motors obviously have to work harder. However, the size of motor you will need depends upon the kind of work you are doing. For craft work and cutting primarily softwoods, a ½ to 1 HP should suffice.
Fence and Gauge
The work table of Allwin band saw should have a standard ¾” by ⅜” mitre slot designed to accept commonly available gauges. The fence must move easily and lock securely, offer at least modest adjustment for alignment to the band, and be easily removed. It should also be easy to true the fence, whether to the mitre slot or blade.
